buy a domain name from a reseller, but dont want to host at that site?

i just registered a domain name trough a reseller company, but i'm having 2nd thoughts about hosting my web site with them . the main reason is that there are not very reliable, and i'm concerned about who have control over my site (i'm afraid they'll change my site u c...) . i want to change to another provider but still have my current domain name.. how can i do that? i asked if they could cancel my domain name so that i can buy it again trough another company but they say they couldn't ... Also, can my existing provider change my site without my permission? can any give me some advice?? im not sure what to do.. thanks and how do i switch a company? who do i contact to ? thanks again, u were all helpful..^^

1. You own the domain so you can use any host you choose for your site. The host does not have access to your content unless you are real sloppy about security. Good Luck
2. A host cannot change your website, unless you are illegally doing something and they recieve abuse reports about it. Even then they wont "change" your site, but they will simply shut it down. #1 You cant cancel a registered domain because once it is registered you are stuck with it for 1-5 years (however long you registered it for). #2 If you dont like the company, it is VERY EASY to switch.... #3 Simply pick the HOST you do want, then sign up for the host, and TRANSFER your domain to the new host :)... I recommend http://www.1and1.com I dont know if they still have the same deals, but when I signed up, I get a huge load of space and bandwidth... For 60 bucks a year, I get 1 free domain, 50 GB of space, 1,200 GB of monthly bandwidth, and mysql and a whole load of other stuff... Very good deal, and 1and1 has never given me any problems.
3. Sign up with your preffered new host and then follow the instructions for transferring your domain to them. If you have a .co.uk domain then it is very simple and you just need to give the new provider your tags.
4. The host may change your website if you do not pay him for webhosting. If you want it completely yours, you will have to pay him a small fee. Changing to a different host is quite simple. All you have to do is look for a different hosting company and say that you 'Already have a domain' and 'Transfer files from a different location'. That's it. Make sure you pay for your hosting and the company's Terms do not allow them to change any of your hosted files.
5. It is easy to switch the provider. You will need to back up your files and point your DNS to new provider. Then just upload your files there.
