Free Web Hosts??

What are the risks of subscribing your domain name to a free web host? (i.e. spams, virus, redirecting of info etc??) Is it really free or there are hidden fees/strategies involved? Whats the REAL catch with free webhosts? what exactly do they get from offering free web hosting? I want to put a message board/forum in my website - are there free webhosts offering this?? Can I be a webhost reseller if I only have a desktop pc at home and minimal computer knowledge?

1. I wouldn't recommend using any free webhosting service. I don't have any big sites, but I like to know that I have ownership over my content and that there's not going to be any strange advertisements appearing over my content. Startlogic offers packages for less than $50 a year, a few others are even cheaper than that.
